Radio Advert - Conventions
Soundbed - A soundbed is a complimentary device where an audio track which tends to be music runs underneath the narration of a radio advert, the volume is lowered to the point where it doesn't conflict with the primary audio track,
Voice over - A voice over is a simple narration over the top of the radio advert, it's purpose is to inform and educate the listener on the documentary.
Time, Date & Channel - in all radio adverts promoting a documentary it always informs the listener on the time the documentary will be aired, the day it will be aired on and the channel that the documentary will be broadcasted from.
Strapline - a strap line is essentially the theme of the documentary summed up in a sentence so the audience know what to expect from the documentary.
Clips from main body - Radio adverts take short clips from the documentary that are suitable to use for a radio advert, almost giving the audience tiny snippets to entice them to watch the documentary.
Dynamic style of edit - This is the editing style used to keep the advert dynamic and engaging, this is done by introduction of a various music tracks, volume gain and quick transition between clips from the main body and narration.
Constant Gain - This is where the sound fades out and another audio track fades in
Timing of radio advert - the timing of most radio adverts tend to be around 30secs, long enough to educate the listener about the documentary.
Thought provoking - Most radio adverts try to be thought provoking, so the listener will think more about the radio advert and then choose to watch the documentary.

Train journey to the gig.
·
We filmed a Lunar C gig and conducted an
interview with the artist.

It was a
good idea to take two camera’s as we could capture the gig from two different
angles, we had one camera at the back mounted on a tripod framed towards the
stage, whilst the other camera we took was handheld so we can capture some
more dynamic shots.
We had some
difficulties when editing the interview, the camera we used the on-board mic
was defective and the sound was corrupt so the interview was not useable.
Also,
looking back on the footage some of it is quite dark it would have been a
good idea to take a mountable light.

Drove to filming location
·
Filmed Matt Gilbertson who is a singer
songwriter recording at his home studio and also rehearsing, also filmed an
interview.

The Mise-en scene that was in shot worked well
as it featured a drum kit, production software on screen as it showed an
unsigned artist making his music from home, it helped that it’s easily
visible that it’s within a home location.
The home studio was full of equipment so it
was tricky to find a correct position to conduct the interview, the framing
for the interview looks cramped.

Drove to filming destination
·
Filmed a local band based in Warrington
called Loor a Los Heroes, filmed they rehearsing and conducted an interview
with the full band.

|
Filming in a
garage worked well because it symbolised the struggle of being an unsigned
small band who struggle for places to play and rehearse.
Looking back
on the footage I feel that camera should have been left alone whilst the
interview took place, at times the camera zoomed in where I thought it was unnecessary,
as it could have damaged the quality of the footage.

travel.
·
Filmed a Rock/Punk band called Electric Mafia;
they allowed us to interview them and to also perform for us so we could
feature them in our documentary.

I think the range of dynamic shots we got
when shooting this band worked well, and we used a lot of them in our
documentary because as a group we thought they worked well and we can overlay
them over interviews for extra dynamism.
I think we could have got better footage
for the interview as a lot of the band members were talking over each other
during the interview and they cut over some interesting talking points that
we would like to have included in our finished documentary.

We got some
good footage with this filming we did, we got some good shots of some music production
in action which worked with the theme of our documentary, unsigned artists.

These screenshots show some of the e-mail conversation between us and Lunar C’s (Rapper) Management.
As a group we
contacted friends and local bands to see if we can interview and film them for
our documentary, we located four artists in the area and also a successful
artist. I arranged filming for a friend of mine called Matt Gilbertson who was
keen to do the interview and filming so he could get some footage of himself
playing so he can use however he wants. Lunar C the successful artist allowed
us to film, after filming we would give all the footage to his management so
they can use.
Interview subjects
- Matt Gilbertson - Singer Songwriter
- Loor A Los Heroes - BritRock Band
- Electric Mafia - Rock/Punk Band
- Lunar C - Unsigned successful rapper
Locations for filming our interview subjects
- Matt Gilbertson - Filming at his self set up home studio.(Studio equipment can be used as props for the mise-en-scene)
- Loor A Los Heroes - Filming in a band members garage (shows the struggle of being a unsigned artist, not having a suitable place to practice, but shows the heart of just playing wherever the band can.) (Amps, instruments will be in shot for the mise-en-scene)
- Electric Mafia - Filmed the interview in a bar?
- Lunar C - Filming the interview backstage at one of Lunar C's gigs in Manchester. (Soup Kitchen)
