Documentary Content Brainstorm

This is a brainstorm of ideas we came up with for our documentary.

Brainstorm of Documentary Ideas

Friday 15 November 2013

Initial Plans

Target Audience
The target audience we're looking to aim our documentary at people aged 16-19 but also, to those slightly older aged 20-25. We decided on this because the artists within the genre are about the same age and the people that go to the events/gigs/concerts who watch them are around this age. In our target audience research, we ensured that we asked people within this bracket in which 27 of the people were aged 16-19 and the other 3 were 20-25. This gave us a good idea of who would watch it and the content included that would appeal to them.

Channel

The channel that we've decided that this would be produced on is Channel Four as they have a history of screening documentaires and they have a lot of programmes that appeal to a younger audience such as Misfits, The Big Bang Theory, Made in Chelsea, etc.

Scheduling

We would ideally screen the documentary at 10:00 on a Monday because it's around the same time as other popular TV programmes within the younger generation; Misfits and Made in Chelsea, and also, it would potentially contain either alcohol consumption or foul language, so it's after the 21:00 barrier.

Title of Programme

The title of the programme that we've decided to come up with is "The Upcoming"

Formal Proposal

Proposal
Topic

The topic we have chosen for our documentary is all about independent musicians or bands, discussing what it's like to be an independent, their dreams and ambitions and how to get signed in today's saturated music industry

Type of documentary

Our documentary will be fully narrative.

Style of documentary

We want to inform our audience about the independent music scene on what it is like to be an unsigned artist, we will be interviewing various bands and artists and also one successful artist who started of as independent and still is today.

Channel and Scheduling

We have chosen to broadcast our documentary on Channel 4 on a Monday at 10pm. It would be more suitable for our target audience and Channel Four tend to be more adventurous with their programming choices and we believe this would be something that would sit well with our documentary style and choice. The time slot we have chosen will be past the watershed so any swearing or explicit language that may feature can be shown. We are planning to broadcast our documentary on a Monday as more of our target audience would be staying in their homes on that particular day due to work/college/University  etc.

Target Audience

The target audience for our documentary is a young adult audience aged between 16-30 we have chosen this as we feel this age group might be able to relate to the documentary more as we are interviewing young unsigned artists and bands to give an idea on how to be successful and what needs to be done to achieve an artists or bands goals and ambitions.

Primary research

We need to research local gigs taking place in the Warrington/Liverpool area, organise interviews with artists and producers, find locations to film including music shops and performance area, get music props such as microphones and speakers for mise-en-scene in interviews.

Secondary research
We need to look for archive footage of independent artists, their gigs or their music videos so we can compare their success to our selected choice of artists and bands. We also need to look into successful music which has been created by successful independent artists which we can play throughout our documentary.

Narrative structure
Our documentary will be linear. Our documentary will start with initial questions on how the band came about and how they got into music, who there inspirations were etc. It will then develop on getting signed as a artist, It's linear through the process of starting a band, playing and then ultimately getting signed.

Our documentary will begin with a montage of music videos from successful independent artists, with narration over the top discussing the theme of the documentary. We will then begin with our interviews where we ask the same questions to each of our interview subjects and edit them together so we have variation and depth to our questions and the responses that follow. During the interviews we will be switching to footage of our interview subjects, performing some of their music for us to add some dynamic to our documentary. It will finish of a summary of independent music and what it stands for looking to engage and inspire our viewers.

Outline of content

In our documentary, we will include various things including a montage of successful independent artists, to show that you can be successful as an unsigned artists. After this however, we will be discussing how hard it is an unsigned band to get noticed and hopeful provide an insight as how to get recognized with some help of interviewee's. We will also look to showcase our interview subjects music off to a wide audience in a attempt to boost their popularity.
